ISO 9001:2026 – Summary of Key Changes
1. Publication Timeline and Process
The final standard is expected to be published in September 2026, which is a delay from the earlier projection of 2025.
As of mid-2025, the standard is in the DIS (Draft International Standard) stage, with approximately three more stages remaining before final publication.
A transition period of approximately 3 years is expected, allowing organizations to migrate from ISO 9001:2015 to the new 2026 version.
2. Key Themes and Evolving Focus
1) Digital Integration and Data Systems
New explicit requirements will be introduced related to AI, digital tools, data integrity, and automation.
2) Emphasis on Sustainability (ESG)
The context of the organization and risk analysis will be expanded to clearly include climate change and ESG-related factors.
3) Structural Alignment (HLS → Harmonized Structure)
The HLS (High-Level Structure) will transition to the Harmonized Structure (HS) to improve consistency across ISO standards.
4) Risk, Opportunity, and Resilience
The distinction between risk and opportunity will be clarified, with increased focus on organizational resilience and quality culture.
5) Expanded Annex A
Annex A will be expanded to include practical implementation guidance, beyond simple explanations.
6) Leadership: Ethics and Integrity
Greater emphasis will be placed on ethical leadership and top management integrity, supporting the development of a strong quality culture.
7) Enhanced Focus on Supply Chain, Resilience, Knowledge & Change Management
Areas such as supply chain control, organizational knowledge, resilience, and change management are expected to be reinforced.
Summary Table
Expected Release : September 2026 (currently in DIS stage)
Transition Period : Estimated 3 years (until around 2029)
Core Themes : Digitalization, ESG integration, Ethical leadership, Harmonized structure, Quality culture
Practical Utility : Expanded Annex A with hands-on implementation guidance
ISO 9001:2026 maintains the foundational structure of ISO 9001:2015 while evolving in a modern, pragmatic direction. It reflects today’s business realities—digital transformation, sustainability, resilience, and ethics—to ensure relevance and practical applicability in current and future organizational contexts.
